On Autumn Delights - California in November

Since the stream dried out, yucca is no longer blooming, and I cannot wade in ankle-deep water, I stopped going for walks in the Wash. How many times can you walk down the same path and not get bored? I got restless in front of my laptop one lovely, sunny afternoon when the sky was perfect sapphire or lapis-lazuli, so brilliant and the sun just became golden, painting the hills into hues of amber and linden honey.

A surprise was waiting for me among pungent bushes of sage and manzanita - some yucca stalks, dried and lifeless were perfectly golden in the setting sun. So a poem came back home with me from that peaceful walk.

Fall Yucca

Golden stems shine like beams of sunset

piercing the purple valley that sinks

into darkness under a soap-bubble sky.

The stems lean sideways, imperceptibly falling

- these are our leaning towers of Yucca in the desert

valley that I make my home. I breathe deeply, delighted

by the omnipresent sheen and sparkle of sonorous

cicadas that rush to surround me with their scintillating

songs of summer, before rains silence them into sleep.

Long, narrow yucca leaves gather at the stems

like supersonic star-beams meeting at one point

on the horizon, blurred by velocity of a Star Wars flight.

They burst out at dusk with a silvery glow

of moonlight - then detach from their drying stems

to crumble into the thick charcoal of the earth.

The yucca's white lily flowers have long turned into

bunches of seed-pods - waiting to fall and germinate

into spikes of sharp leaves that poke from the rocky soil

with a promise and a certainty of survival –

the next year's yucca.  Shadows reveal sparks

of icy stars above me – I walk home, content.

My rock heart that I wrote a ballad about and kept placing on a little indent in a larger rock is gone, so I found another rock heart and placed it right there. This place I call the Rock Heart Valley, so it has to have its heart!  Nearby someone put together a tall cairn of rocks, so I took a photo  of it.

I'm not the only one here interested in rock art. someone else put together a spiral to walk into and outside. I did that and got dizzy from turning inwards at smaller and smaller angles, until the whole valley was rotating around me, standing transfixed under the sapphire sky.

The nights are cool these days, winter chill comes out right after sunset, though it still feels like summer in direct sunlight. Roses like it and after slumbering through the hottest months of the year, July through September, they finally started blooming again. I have several new, fragrant varieties to join the pink French Perfume that had as many as 30 roses simultaneously.  The smaller bushes have one or two, but so pretty in their rainbow colors and delicate, intoxicating scents.  Sometimes I stand in front of the rose bush and take 10-20-30 breaths of the rose perfume - aromatherapy done live!  Here's a new poem about the two-color rose, cream inside, blush pink outside, called the Double Delight.

Double Delight

Gentle as dawn, clearing

the sky of midnight nightmares

my November rose smiles to herself

rearranging the bluh and pink crinoline

of petals folded into a heart –

her secret within

She tells me to laugh

and laugh again, overflowing

with childish joy, champaign bubbling

in a crystal – while the air around me –

is heavy with cries of panic, anguish, hate.

“What of the news?” you say,

“Who lived, who died, who suffered?”

I’m silent, exploring the inner landscapes

that only music knows – the infinity

of cellos, violins, and the lover’s gaze

locked in the key of brightness.

I'm grateful for my Double Delight, I'm grateful for my pomegranates, here filled with thank-yous in so many languages. Gratitude is the virtue of blessings.

August Tales from the Garden and the Sea

My garden is a refuge and a source of endless delights, even without a side fence removed for the month-long, very noisy construction of a neighbor's swimming pool next door.  The bees in the crape myrtle tree sound almost like those of my Grandma's - from her linden tree. The birds are busy flittering from side to side of the garden, drinking water or picking on my green grapes. The rabbits - yes I have two wild rabbits, or rather wild hares living in thickets under the bushes - nibble on grass blades in the shade, hop around to explore, stop to look at me with the black beady eyes, somewhat curious, but utterly unafraid. They trained us, humans, well, these hares. The dog next door guards them from coyotes, the kids give them carrots. Perfection!  I tried to write a poem about the hare, but it turned into a short story...

When I go out to the front porch in the morning, I am startled by enormous white wings of the great egret spreading out right in front of me. The stream in the wash dried out. We do not poison our yards with toxins. Egrets, hares, and a flotilla of birds come over to eat and drink, enjoy the mini-Eden... Did I mention that there are plenty of bees? Mason bees?

Mason Bees

I share my roses with the mason bees –

Iceberg leaves they like the best, cutting

circles and ellipses from the edge, inwards.

Iceberg roses, not iceberg lettuce, mind you,

that’s far too crunchy to make soft beds, wrapping

bee babies in green, white or pink silkiness,

smooth and pliable like we ought to be, smiling

under the merciless gale of time, raging river

flowing backwards, always backwards.

I used to get angry looking at my mutilated

roses – white blossoms, a defense against evil

guarding my front door like bee soldiers in the hive

ready to sacrifice their lives – just one sting

and the miniature fuzzy warrior’s gone – having

lived just to protect and serve us, the worker bees,

buzzing around our lives, cutting circles and

ellipses in white roses. Bees and humans, we are

all children of the Queen Bee, Gaia, our Mother.

We make honey of our kindness, virtues, character

wisdom, self-reliance. Attentive, focused on the next

perfect circle, semicircle or ellipsis – we breathe deeply,

delight in drinking nectar, carrying pollen of emotions,

sights, impressions – flying back home to make the sweetest

gold, translucent honey of our poems, of our dreams.

On Thursday Afternoon

Your voice outside my window –

deep, calm flowing inexorably like a river

towards the future we will not know until

we look back and the past and say:

So that’s what you meant. So, that’s what it was.

Understanding the whole of the whole

that encircles us in a glowing sphere of

emotions – forgiveness, radiance, joy

of the fleeting moment, The present.

The golden line of a mockingbird song

weaves in and out of time – I follow

its ornamental thread into the present –

space opened up by gratitude

blossoming in a smile.

Sparrows in the birdbath, jet planes

in the sky, hummingbird’s wings,

the dove’s shadow passing over the lawn

and chimes playing endless variations

of the same melody over and over

until all time ends and we are back

in that singularity beyond all spatiotemporal

emanations, back in One Love of One

Mind, One Will, One – Us.

On day trips to the beach, I see sea-gulls, pelicans and sand-pipers when I walk along the sandy expanse. It is the waves and the water that I'm most interested in, the endless soothing rhythm, the untamed energy.  Life itself.  The light that scatters on the surface, the play of the elements - earth, water, air, wind, fire...

The Glow of Forgiveness

Like a mountain stream over rocks,

wearing them out droplet by droplet,

forgiveness flows inexorably to its

dissolution in the blessed serenity

of living waters of the presence,

knowledge, charm.

Infinitely self aware and infinitely grateful,

you the forgiving one are also forgiven –

all limitations removed, all rubble of past

misfortunes cleared to reveal a smooth expanse

of  sunlit ocean – gold and silver, topaz and jade

with a sprinkling of diamonds shimmering

on glass smoothness, scattering around you

as you float on the surface, resting beyond

sorrow, beyond pain, beyond time.

I wrote Aquamarine a while back and sent to Carole Boyce, she liked it and included in the "Blue and the Blues" anthology that she published in January 2021. It is a wonderful anthology, and I'm pleased to add some shades of blue to its rainbow.

My Holiday Survival Guide - On the Art of Sharing Joy

There are times to be happy and times to be happier, the holidays are made for that. You can be happy and celebrate if you have enough time to do that. If not everything becomes a dreadful drag, annoying to the max. So, how to survive holidays without stressing out about it?

my favorite star
for my Christmas tree
handmade by Ania

First, limit the number of events, gifts, projects. If you do not finish something, do not worry. You can always do it next year. I send Christmas cards by mail, still, because I like it. I start addressing them from different end of the alphabet each year, in this way if I run out of time and do not send some cards one year, I'm sure to send it the next year, I'll do more than half each time... That's the virtue of moderation...

filled with surprises inside -
a pomegranate

Second, enjoy the moment. Holidays are for taking time OFF projects and work, and we managed to convert them into MORE work. So let's reverse the trend and from time to time just do nothing. Buy fewer, less expensive, more engaging gifts. Like books, or favorite movie classics, or board games...
Spend time outside, go to the park, work in the garden, or take that book you were going to give away for Christmas but just could not stop yourself from reading and lie down on a blanket in your backyard or sit on your favorite chair on your balcony, and enjoy!  That's the virtue of wisdom or prudence..

Third, be always grateful and kind. So you had that fender bender in the Christmas tree parking lot? Are you going to get mad and start yelling at the other party, or are you going to wish them Merry Christmas anyway?  Are you going to cut off someone in traffic because you have to be everywhere first, or are you going to drive more carefully, listening to your favorite Christmas carols, and singing along to your heart delight? So what if you are five minutes late? OK, an hour is a problem, but then you have to leave much, much earlier.  That's the virtue of gratitude with kindness.

like a pomegranate
we are seeds tightly packed
onto our planet

Fourth rule is about sharing. And what about the unwanted gifts, those ugly sweaters, or ridiculous decorations you have no room for? Say thanks, appreciate the intention, and send good thoughts to the misguided giver, and then... give it to someone else who might like it, or donate it to a charity. You'd be surprised how many charities would like some extra Christmas decorations or ugly sweaters, especially those dealing with the homeless. The most important thing is the intention of sharing and celebrating together. The joy of Christmas... That's the virtue of generosity...

And when you make your gifts or bring things to a holiday gathering, remember it is all about time and effort and intention, and not at all about money. I remember a lovely Tibetan tale about the Emperor who ha donkey ears and his barber's mom, who saved the boy's life by baking sweet-scented cookies made of milk, rice flower, and the full power of her motherly love... The Emperor was so moved by them that he relented and allowed the barber to live, even though he killed all other ones, out of fear that they would have exposed his ridiculous secret. On one level, we all have our own donkey ears, our ugly secrets. On another, we all know how to bake cookies filled with love...

a kiss a day
makes sorrow go away
twice as fast

Fifth Holiday Survival Rule is about writing and giving. Write something positive and nice about someone and give it to them. I do it every year at work, write 30 or more cards with personal messages to my co-workers I share most of my daylight hours with. They are happy to eat a Lindt chocolate and read their card, with  smiles on their faces. Yet their joy does not compare with the joy I feel when I think of all these good wishes for all these good people - every time I write "may your year be full of health, happiness, prosperity and peace" I feel a bit lighter... That's one reason why I do it. It makes me feel better, be better.  That's the virtue of service.

my daughter's gift

That's the real antidote of stressing out whether the gifts are elegant enough, the wrapping is perfect enough, the cake is decorated well enough, the house is spotless, and the parties' guest list most fashionable and distinguished... Just give the gifts of appreciation and love to all those around you and by the very act of giving, you will receive so much joy in return.

Today, I picked photos of pomegranates from my garden to illustrate this post, even though the pomegranates are all eaten, by me, squirrels, and birds, and the trees barren, even the golden leaves have fallen off. The pomegranate is the fruit of love and abundance: all these delicious little fruits packed so tightly inside! Like humans and other living sentient beings on our planet. So tightly, we cannot help by adjust our rough corners to others next to us...and love them as we love ourselves!

 timeless riches

Finally, Christmas holiday is placed on the calendar near the Winter Solstice, when the days stop becoming shorter and nights longer, and after the longest night, the Earth becomes brighter and brighter every day... In the Northern hemisphere, at last. So it is a celebration of the victory of Light over Darkness, the victory of Love over Lack of Love... the Victory of Victory of the Great Cosmic Victory, and on, ad infinitum....

Bright Sun above , its radiance all around me
Bright Sun within, awakened by its touch
I breathe the Light, my heart sings of its brilliance
My mind my body dance in endless Light.
My days are full of peace, pure radiant beauty
Bright Sun above, my joy, my love, my light.

How can you turn towards Light, when you are too busy to breathe? Or so it seems with under the avalanche of so many "to-dos" every day... Here are some simple meditations on Light inside you an Light around you that you do not have to memorize, read in their entirety, but simply imagine. Imagination works! It will clear the space around you, clear your mind, and clear your heart... Ready? Get going!

Imagine, A Poem of Light

Are you an apple? Or maybe a ripe seed

inside an apple of light - so you are snug
and safe in the core of a torus of light rays?
You are wrapped in white light, dazzling
rays flowing around, from your crown into
toes, enveloping you in a bright cocoon
of magnetic lines, with six-winged angels
on all sides, gladly watching over you...

Are you, perhaps, a fountain?

Your heart, a spring of goodness.
Liquid light overflows all over you.
Your heart-beat marks a smooth rhythm
of the gentle pulse of the heart fountain.
This light is the miracle you forget about
every day, oblivious, while your blood carries
your heart-light into every cell of the body.

Not a fountain? Then, a star, maybe?

Or two stars. The larger one brightly shines
on your chest, its rays straight and dazzling.
Multicolored sparkles dance in brightness.
Another star glows on your forehead,
as new and radiant as your heart star.
Here you are: a rainbow of light
still shining - shining - shining -

(c) Maja Trochimczyk, 2018

a sunburst
and a pink umbrella

for my attention

Imagination and meditation are very important. There are only two forces in the entire cosmos - love that connects everything and fear that destroys everything. Or Love an Lack. So you have to turn to love and cut yourself off from fear. "I revoke, or cancel all contracts and agreements wtih the dark, for the dark, all in the present, future and the past. I dedicate my life to the service of love and light." Now, everything is pure, bright, radiant divine love. So be it and so it is.

You could then bring this brightness to everyone you know. In the "Loving Kindness Meditation" you open your heart to send prayers and good wishes out for all beings. I found it on Stillness in the Storm blog:

"Beginning with yourself you say: May I be well, May I be happy, May I be at peace. Then you move onto friends and family members, repeating the phrases  (May you be well, May you be happy, May you be at peace), while visualising your loved ones. Finally you move onto someone you are having difficulties with, bring them into your mind and repeat the heartfelt prayers that they be well, happy and at peace. You can also use Loving Kindness Meditation to pray for groups of people, animals, or the whole world." Easy, non?

Time for a Christmas poem, then. With all the things to do this year, I finally wrote a new Christmas poem, but I'm also reproducing here a favorite from the past.

like the red thread
in the hand-embroidered sign -
love is everything

Christmas  is Love

Did you know that Christmas
Is love, love, love, only love
To be shared and cherished?
When baking together, hands
Covered in flour, fingertips
Sweetened with chopped figs
Or purple from peeling beets
For the barszcz, the Wigilia staple,
While the honeyed voice of
Nat King Cole asks us to have
Ourselves a merry, little Christmas.

Love means sharing a laugh
At the antics of the dog that runs
In circles on the lawn, so happy
To be free without leash, orders to
Sit, roll, be still, obey the master.
Love is a quiet moment thinking
How to write the warmest wishes
To send far away, so far, this year
So that only kindest feelings
Are captured in words that glisten
With happiness and affection.

Merry Christmas!!!

New Year's Gifts of Poetry, Enchantment, and Loving Kindness

White Rose in Darkness, by Maja Trochimczyk

It is time to send good wishes. For Christmas peace and delight. For New Year blessings. For Hanukah. For all other holidays that people celebrate at this time of the year. Why do we need holidays? Holy Days? To set aside some time and "sanctify" this time with feelings and actions of goodness, forgiveness, loving kindness, delight, child-like wander, joy, and peace, and tranquility of the heart that comes from being at-one with the world, at-one with the time and space of right here, right now.

Of Bliss

I'm burning but I'm not burnt
In agony, but not yet dying
Light streams out of my heart
Filled into overflowing
Sounds of an ancient tongue
Trigger a glimpse of a time
When the rose and the flame are one
Wreath of fire which engulfs me
Dissolving into stillness

A white wave reaches its destiny
The valley brightens
Under a shaft of sunlight
The air is sweetened with flutes
And harps – how obvious,
how delightful! A breath
and music cascade into silence

Love is no father, no mother
But this: perfection
Of all things in all
Feelings collapsed into one
Not a longing, really,
And not satisfaction.

Perfect fulfillment:

All dreams.

In my Christmas and New Year Wishes for 2017, I quote poems and post pictures of gifts that I'm thankful for, the gifts of art, of poetry, of presence and enlightenment that I received from my friends or found somewhere, somehow.

The Elements of Water and Sun, by Maja Trochimczyk

I was quite surprised that I got a gift from a new poet at our readings, Mr. Yatindra Bhatnagar, a serious man who somehow reminded me of my father in his seriousness, and earnestness, gravitas,  you could say. Here's the poem I received with delight and put on my desk at work:

LIFE

Life is sacrifice, make it,
Life is a reward, take it.

Life is beauty, admire it,
Life is success, desire it.

Life is a dream, conjure it,
Life is a struggle, endure it.

Life is community, reform it,
Life is a duty, perform it.

Life is reality, face it,
Life is love, embrace it.

Life is a battle, fight it,
Life is a path, light it.

Life is a game, play it,
Life is truth, say it.

(c) by Yatindra Bhatnagar.

Lovely, isn't it?  The voice of reason, the call to embrace life in all its complexity and challenges, in truth, reality, beauty and love... Thank you, Yatindra.

Pacific Beach in Ventura, by Maja Trochimczyk
Pacific Beach in Ventura (c) by Maja Trochimczyk, 2016

I was equally delighted when I got a message from my dear friend, a multi-talented poet-artist Toti O'Brien who wrote a short story about creating Sweet Relief, an artwork that now proudly adorns my home. Below is an excerpt from Toti's piece, published as "The Tapestry" in Communion, Issue 6. http://walleahpress.com.au/communion6-Toti-O'Brien.html

Toti O'Brien with Sweet Relief, August 2014,(c) by Maja Trochimczyk

"The inspiration for the painting came in times of fertility and steadiness, when I still was my own master. I conceived it as a mosaic of many squares, something I’d tackle a fragment at the time, then put together at last. From the same fertility a family sprung, while the work was two thirds on its way. The last third reflected my new status: I switched from brushes to needles… matching the mood of nursing and lullabying. The materials I used, thread and cloth, subliminally hinted at blood ties, domesticity." [...]

"I decided to call the piece “Sweet Relief”, when I began the sewing portion… to express my focus: exploring effects on color and form of a barely hinted third dimension. Therefore, I provided no more than a technical definition. Although, those two words were the title of a song I had liked, ten years earlier. I had fallen in love with it, even decided to learn it, listening to the same old tape a disconcerting number of times." [...]

"It took me sixteen years to complete the labor. During that time I was calling. Did relief ever come? I dare say yes. Stitch by stitch, I put it together. With my fading eyes, my ten fingers."

And now, this beautiful piece, that took sixteen years to create, square by square, one after another, is in the central point in my home. I like watching the patterns, repeating, varying, from image to image, abstract, pastel, yet rich beyond belief... Thank you, Toti.

It is fascinating to me that Toti had the persistence needed to finish the work, to keep adding to it, square by square, year by year. What an amazing project! But what's equally amazing are the blessings we receive. Blessings of patience...

The Gift of Patience

squeeze your eyes tight
raise your face to the sun
see the magic kaleidoscope
of jagged shapes
under your eyelids

the white light heals
the white light erases
the white light sings
a new world into being
a world without torture
a world without shame
a new world

just close your eyes
just wait, do not peek
the grace will come
the grace will come
the white light sings

Timeless Ray of Hope, Maja Trochimczyk, Text Kimberly Meredith
Timeless Ray of Hope (c) by Maja Trochimczyk with text by Kimberly Meredith (thehealingtrilogy.com)

One source of blessings, for me, is the spiritual healer, Kimberly Meredith, who has a simple message, different for everyone, yet the same - forgiveness, love, compassion, living in the light, in love, in the present of grace.... I made an image with her words and hope to see her again. She helps people find their own way to health and happiness.

My way to happiness includes my friends, especially the four  "birds" of the Spiritual Quartet - Lois P. Jones (The Phoenix), Ambika Talwar (The Peacock), Susan Rogers (The Hummingbird) and myself (The Dove of Love, they called me). Once upon a time, the birds went to the forest. To be exact, to the enchanted forest sound-and-light installation at Descanso Gardens in La Canada. Pure magic. Something to remember and be deeply thankful for.

L to R: Maja, Ambika, Lois, and Susan at Descanso Gardens, 2016

There is a field of tulips changing color in waves, the symphony of oaks that play bells and chords modulating when you go around them, the color lights on the fog above water, the circles and spheres of light that change color when you walk from circle to circle,

Path of Light Drops, Maja Trochimczyk

The enchanted ancient forest with thousands of fire flies, the moving shadows on the lilacs, the blue, green and purple trees showing off their contours, the red lanterns reflected in the deep darkness of the water, beneath oak branches and camellia blossoms. Pure magic. With something for kids and something for adults, and stars above our heads, bright, oh so bright...

Give me your hand... by Maja Trochimczyk

This beautiful installation brings the best of technology and nature together. This is THE way to use the recent developments in technology: remote sensors that trigger beautiful sounds from hidden computers and loudspeakers when people dance about the oaks; light projectors and computer controls that move the thousands of fire fly lights on the canopies of redwoods and sycamores, that dance on the surface of the pond, that color the forest with a magic palette of violets and sapphires.

All to create beauty, thankfulness and gratitude in people's hearts. The tall, majestic trees of Descanso Gardens are beautiful in any weather, any light. They are just that, beauty personified. But the colored lights and sounds add another dimension, playful, and delightful, to the already beautiful, enchanted and enchanting forest - something for children that are four, and children that are sixty four...

Rest with me... by Maja Trochimczyk

And then, I read, and read, and listened. I am on this endless quest to find the truth behind the truth, the core of reality hidden in plain view within our reality here and now. I found bits and pieces already. The Beatles sung about it - Love, Love, Love... It is so obvious and so present that it is so very easy to miss and ignore.

Japanese Garden by Maja Trochimczyk

You have to pause and think, or look at it from a different perspective. Say, the "timeline" of your life.  Can you change this timeline, can you jump to a different reality, a different world? Yes, it is easy, so easy. And you can do it in several steps (thanks to YouTube for posting the video with this inspiration, supposedly channeled from Egyptian deities that lived long ago).
  • First Step: Imagine as your goal the timeline of the world of Loving Kindness
  • Second Step: Fill your heart and head with the idea and feeling of Loving Kindness to all, everyone and everything, right here, right now
  • Third Step: Act with Loving Kindness towards all, everyone and everything, right here, right now, and always
  • Fourth Step: Persevere and maintain that mental and emotional state of Loving Kindness regardless of how people respond to you and how you are treated.
That's it, you are done.

You have jumped to the timeline of Loving Kindness. You live in Heaven, or rather, Heaven lives in you.

Remember, the fourth step is the most important. Do not sink into regret, anger, fear, hatred, disgust, despondency, nor anything negative. Do not sink into the quagmire of self-inflicted negativity, neither self-indulgence, nor self-aggrandizement will take you to your destination of Loving Kindness.

Isn't it great? Entering this blessed and blissful world is very easy, having the intention to do it is also easy, what's hard is to keep going, stay in this magic kindgom, and maintain your attitude and feelings of Loving Kindness towards all, everyone and everything in the face of adversity, cold, trouble, mosquitoes that bite your arms, or pesky and annoying people that say nasty things to annoy you.

So I wish everyone to find their own world of Loving Kindness and fill this world with blessings of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control...If all people followed that path we'd have no wars, right? Why don't I start from myself? And end there? Since I cannot change others, only myself?

Loving Kindness is one of the names of God, and if we are made of Loving Kindness, we are simply Divine!  Here's a poem of gratitude for this astounding gift.
